Moving a Large Fox Tail Agave

In the heat of this past Summer I was demolishing a corner of my backyard after some new fence construction left it in bad shape. There were a few plants I wanted to save - among them a larger Agave attenuata "Boutin Blue". They look delicate but true to their Agave lineage are tough and quick rooters.

It took a little effort to dig up (carefully) - but was much easier than I had expected.

I was hopeful that the amount of roots I saved would be enough to aid in recovery. Frankly I've seen people just use a saw to cut through the stalk, put the plant straight in the ground and wait for the adventitious roots to develop.

As it turned out the plant was happier in it's new location - yay!

It's definitely worth saving large Aloe / Agave / Cacti. They take so long to grow and buying a full size specimen like the above is just too expensive!

  1. Ha! I'm one of those people known to saw an Agave attenuata with a good-sized trunk and immediately plant it (although the majority I cut are smaller pups). However, I'm sure that sending it off with at least some of its roots is a lesser shock to its system. Yours looks good in int new location - many of mine take a longer time to adjust.

  2. 'Boutin Blue' is a beauty. It looks perfect for its new location.

I'm not strong enough to move a really big Agave--that one looks like it was pretty heavy!
